In the victory, the Ball State offense connected for a season-best .423 (38-8-71) attack percentage, while limiting the Chicago State attack to a -.055 (13-17-73) rate of success.
Jennifer Boyd (Evans City, Pa./Seneca Valley H.S.) paced the Cardinals with 10 kills, while hitting a season-best .750 (10-1-12). Niena Posey and Kimberly Naut led the Chicago State offense with four kills apiece, while Brittany Hale added a team-best eight digs.
After trading the first two points of the match, back-to-back kills from Boyd brought the Cardinals to life, as they rallied off the next four points to pull ahead 5-1. Moments later a Boyd service ace forced the Cougars to call their first timeout trailing 10-3.
Ball State extended its lead to 10 points at the 14-4 mark on a Green solo block. From there, the Cardinals posted 11 of the final 15 points, winning the frame 25-8 on back-to-back Green kills.
BSU opened the second set with a 6-1 run, with Breivogel capping the run with a pair of kills. Chicago State scored the next two points, only to see the Cardinals surge to a 10-point lead at 15-5 on an attack error.
The Cardinals extended their lead to 15 points at 21-6 thanks to a block from Boyd and Kelsey Brandl (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North H.S.). A Boyd kill set up set point at 24-9, while a Breivogel kill ended the frame at 25-10.
Ball State jumped out to another 6-1 advantage in the third game, thanks in part to a pair of kills from Boyd and a Lauren Schlaker (Oswego, Ill./Oswego East H.S.) service ace. Chicago State was able to keep the frame close, trailing by three at the 10-7 mark.
However, kills from Brandl and Green got the Cardinals rolling again, while a pair of Andrea Felton (New Berlin, Wis./Eisenhower H.S.) service aces gave Ball State a 15-7 lead. From there, BSU scored 10 of the final 15 points, winning the match on a block from Boyd and Felton.
