TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - - The Ball State (4-4) women's volleyball team collected its second straight sweep in the 2009 Best Western ISU Classic with a 3-0 (25-14, 25-22, 25-17) victory over Eastern Illinois (5-6) Saturday morning at Indiana State's ISU Arena.
The Cardinals continued their solid offensive play in the tournament, racking up a .245 (40-14-106) team attack percentage, with Charde' Phillips (Elyria, Ohio/Elyria H.S.) paving the way by connecting for eight kills on 16 with just one error for a .438 rate of success.
Alisha Green (Country Club Hills, Ill./Hillcrest H.S.) was the Cardinals top scorer, smashing a match-best 12 kills while adding three solo blocks. On the defensive end, Christie Waters (Muncie, Ind./Burris Laboratory School) collected a team-best 11 digs, while Julie Breivogel (Boonville, Ind./Boonville H.S.) added 10.
Overall, Ball State limited the Panthers to a .045 (27-22-110) attack percentage in the contest, including negative hitting marks in the first and third sets. Jori Dieter and Melanie Boykins paced the EIU offense with seven kills apiece. Eastern Illinois' Alex Zwettler paced all players with 12 digs in the matchup.
Aces from Kaylee Schembra (Indianapolis, Ind./Roncalli H.S.) and Karin Caudill (Selma, Ind./Burris Laboratory School) bookended a 5-2 Ball State run to open the first set. Eastern Illinois followed with the next three points, only to see a kill and ace from Breivogel give the Cardinals the lead for good in the frame.
Three straight kills from Green, Jennifer Boyd (Evans City, Pa./Seneca Valley H.S.) and Elaina Kakatolis (Arcanum, Ohio/Franklin Monroe H.S.) forced EIU to call its first timeout trailing 12-5, while back-to-back markers from Phillips and Green gave BSU an eight-point edge at 20-12. Kakatolis followed with an ace after the Panthers' second timeout, while two kills and a solo block from Green gave BSU set point at 25-14. An EIU attack error ended the game at 25-14.
Ball State opened the second set with another 5-2 run, only to see the Panthers claw back and take their first lead of the match at 7-6 on an Alison Berens ace. With EIU holding a 13-10 lead, Ball State posted the next four points, including a pair of kills from Phillips, to regain a slim 14-13 advantage.
BSU's Green would then break open a 15-15 tie with a pair of kills surrounding a solo block to force EIU to call timeout trailing 18-15. Ball State extended its lead to five points after the break, only to see the Panthers post the next three points to cut the lead to 20-18.
Green scored a kill out of BSU's second timeout, but the Panthers would draw within one at 21-20. The edge remained one at the 22-21 mark, before a Breivogel kill and block assists (in which she was joined by Phillips) gave the Cardinals set point at 24-21. A kill from EIU's Jorie Dieter gave the Panthers the serve, but a service error ended the frame at 25-22.
Neither club was able to gain momentum early in the third stanza, as the teams battled to a 14-14 stalemate. A pair of EIU miscues broke the tie, while a kill from BSU's Kelsey Brandl (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North H.S.) led to the Panther calling timeout trailing 17-14.
A block assist from Kakatolis and Breivogel extended BSU's lead to five points at 20-15, while back-to-back kill from Green and Breivogel made the score 22-16. A pair of Kakatolis kills gave BSU match-point at the 24-17 mark, while Phillips ended the game with a kill at 25-17.
