Field Hockey Opens Season With Win Over Davidson
August 29, 2009 | Field Hockey
Ball State powered its offense tallying 10 shots, six of which came in the first period. At the 18:29 mark Brooke MacGillivary's (North Vancouver, B.C./Carson Graham) strike to the upper left corner gave the Cardinals the lead with an assist from Gretchen Lulow (Ballwin, Mo./Cor Jesu Academy), who sat out last season with a medical redshirt. MacGillivary logged four shots in the game.
However Davidson fought back as Ellie Szykowny scored a goal less than a minute later to tie the game 1-1. Ball State continued with three more shots to the Wildcats' one just before the half.
The Cardinals kept their stride firing four more shots sixteen minutes into second half action. Hannah Jones (Louisville, Ky./Dupont Manual) allowed Ball State to pull away with the 2-1 victory with her third career goal on a rebound from the left side at the 46:18 mark.
Senior goalkeeper Tiffany Shifflett (Yorktown, Va./Hampton Roads Academy) also made five saves in 70 minutes of action in the cage.
Ball State takes on Appalachian State 11 a.m. Sunday at Belk Turf Field in Davidson, North Carolina.
