Stines Drafted In 33rd Round By Houston Astros

MUNCIE, Ind. ? Ball State senior right-hander Brenden Stines (Granger, Ind./Penn) became the second Cardinal this season to be selected in the 2009 Major League Baseball Draft as he was tabbed in the 33rd round by the Houston Astros with the 1001st pick overall. Stines is the 47th player in Ball State history to have his named called and joins junior center fielder Jeremy Hazelbaker (Selma, Ind./Wapahani) who was drafted in the fourth round of the draft.
He was named the Mid-American Conference West Division Pitcher of the Week after tossing 7.0 innings of three-hit baseball as he limited Northern Illinois (May 9) to one unearned run while striking out a career-high 11 batters. He also tallied victories against MAC Tournament champion Kent State, MAC Tournament finalist Toledo and Central Michigan.
