Stines Drafted In 33rd Round By Houston Astros

MUNCIE, Ind. ? Ball State senior right-hander Brenden Stines (Granger, Ind./Penn) became the second Cardinal this season to be selected in the 2009 Major League Baseball Draft as he was tabbed in the 33^rd round by the Houston Astros with the 1001^st pick overall. Stines is the 47^th player in Ball State history to have his named called and joins junior center fielder Jeremy Hazelbaker (Selma, Ind./Wapahani) who was drafted in the fourth round of the draft.

Stines, a three-year letterwinner for the Cardinals, made 17 appearances and 13 starts as part of the Ball State weekend rotation this year. He posted a 4-4 overall record with a 5.77 ERA as he worked a team-high 64.0 innings. He recorded 43 strikeouts on the season while walking 32 batters.

He was named the Mid-American Conference West Division Pitcher of the Week after tossing 7.0 innings of three-hit baseball as he limited Northern Illinois (May 9) to one unearned run while striking out a career-high 11 batters. He also tallied victories against MAC Tournament champion Kent State, MAC Tournament finalist Toledo and Central Michigan.
