April 15, 2009 | Softball
Muncie, Ind. ? The Ball State softball team (20-17, 10-1 in the Mid-American Conference) fell on the road to non-conference opponent Purdue Wednesday 7-1. The Cardinals trailed eight to three in hits.
Since playing another Big Ten opponent, Ohio State, eight games ago, Ball State had always taken the early lead. However, after two innings, Purdue (21-14, 5-5 in the Big Ten) led 5-1 off four hits, scoring four runs in the first inning and did not look back.
Without earning a hit in the top of the second, Alyssa Collins, who went one-for-two, scored the only run for Ball State after she was initially walked and advanced to second on a wild pitch. She later scored on a passed ball. Neither team scored in the third inning.
Ball State had chances with runners on second and third in the top of the fourth, but the Cardinals were unable to capitalize. The Boilermakers; however, increased their advantage with a run in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single. The Cardinals defense gave up two hits in the inning, for a six to two deficit in hits.
Purdue extended its lead 7-1 in the bottom of the fifth with the team's second RBI double of the day.
Lisa Rozanski's streak of 21 perfect stolen bases ended after she was thrown out by the catcher at second base early in the game.
The Cardinals used three pitchers in the game. After Laura Masch (5-4) pitched one and a third innings, Elizabeth Milian stepped in for relief. Milian pitched the next three and a third innings, giving up one earned run with four strikeouts. Kim Mazzapica closed the last full inning earning one strikeout and giving up just one hit in her fourth appearance.
The Cardinals are back at the BSU Softball Complex 1 p.m. Friday for a double header matchup against Northern Illinois. Ball State takes on Western Michigan 2 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday for its second-to-last home stand.
