The Ball State softball team lost 10-1 against Wichita State in Holiday Inn Northwest Arkansas Razorback Invitational Friday. The Cardinals were scheduled to play Arkansas at 6 p.m., but the game was postponed and later cancelled due to weather.
GAME 1 RECAP
Wichita State (7-8) struck early in Ball State's first game of the tournament, scoring two runs in the first inning. Senior Tiffany Garofano pitched a third of the inning before senior Laura Masch relieved her. Masch held the Shockers scoreless in the next inning but allowed two more runs in the third.
Alyssa Collins logged the first hit for the Cardinals on a single to center field as the first batter in the second inning but was stranded on base. Ball State added three more hits and a squeeze bunt by Alicia Barkley to allow Lisa Rozanski to score the first run of the game for the Cardinals in the third inning. The RBI was Barkley's fourth of the season, while Rozanski stole her third base of the year in the same inning.
Wichita State's Jamie Hull hit in the final two runs by knocking a two-run homer over the left field fence, putting the score at 10-1.
Kim Mazzapica came in for the last out, but it was unable to prevent Wichita State from winning by the eight-run rule. Garofano's record stands at 0-2.
Kiersten Dixon went four-for-four, scoring two runs for Wichita State, while Ball State's Rozanski notched two hits for her second multi-hit game, as well as the team's lone run. Allie Pennock, Barkley and Collins each added a hit apiece of the Cardinals' five total.
GAME 2 RECAP
The Cardinals faced the host Arkansas Razorbacks (8-7) in the second game of the day.
Pennock sent her first of two hits to left field for the Cardinals in the first inning. Wilczynski also added a single to left field in the second inning. Three Cardinals earned hits in the third inning, but the score remained 0-0.
It wasn't until the fourth inning when the Razorbacks' Tori Mort hit an inside-the-park home run were the Razorbacks first on the board.
With one out and Rozanski on first and Katelyn Gunderson (pinch running for Wilczynski) on third, a rain delay was issued in the top of the sixth inning. Despite Ball State leading six hits to the Razorback's three, the game was cancelled, giving Arkansas the 1-0 victory.
On Saturday, day two of the event, Ball State (2-7) is set to play Bradley at 1:30 p.m., and South Dakota State at 6 p.m. Bradley lost both games Friday to South Dakota State and Arkansas 10-5. South Dakota State lost its first game 7-3 to Wichita State, but beat Bradley 1-0.
