Women's Swimming & Diving Picks Up Three Saturday Wins

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - - The Ball State women's swimming & diving team scored three more wins Saturday afternoon, as it collected victories over IUPUI (106-34), Saint Louis (99.5-40.5) and Western Illinois (104-35) in a quadrangular meet at the IUPUI Natatorium.
The Cardinals have had a large amount of success at the Natatorium so far this season, posting a 3-0 record in dual action while winning the seven-team IUPUI House of Champions meet held Nov. 13-14. With Saturday's three wins, Ball State is now 5-3 (1-3 Mid-American Conference) on the year.
Overall the BSU women's squad scored wins in 10 of the 16 scored events. Eight different Cardinals tallied individual event wins on the day, with sophomore Elizabeth Spilman (Bristol, Ind./Northridge H.S.) leading the way with two victories; the 1000 freestyle (10:50.89) and the 200 breaststroke (2:30.10).
The meet started with the Cardinals' 200 medley relay squad of sophomore Nicole Saulters (Highland, Ind./Highland H.S.), senior Emily Karwoski (Zionsville, Ind./North Central H.S.) and juniors Alanna Bader (Monroe, Wis./Monroe H.S.) and Katie Bylsma (Westfield, Ind./Pinckney H.S.)posting a time of 1:50.44 to win the event by over two seconds.
Spilman followed with her victory in the 1000 freestyle, while Saulters captured first in the fourth event, the 100 backstroke (59.71), to help Ball State build a solid advantage over the three other teams in the meet.
Karwoski, Bylsma and Bader each added individual wins to their victory in the 200 medley relay, as Karwoski captured the 100 breaststroke (1:07.62), Bylsma won the 100 freestyle (53.42) and Bader took top billing in the 100 fly (58.88).
Also scoring individual event wins for the Cardinals were senior Mary Ehresman (Lafayette, Ind./Jefferson H.S.), junior Maria Gramelspacher (Jasper, Ind./Jasper H.S.) and sophomore Sara Hostetler (Vincennes, Ind./Jasper H.S.).
Ehersman won the200 backstroke with a time of 2:12.65, while Gramelspacher clocked in at 2:15.85 to take first in the 200 IM. Hostetler swam to victory in the 200 backstroke at 2:12.65.
The Ball State women's swimming & diving team returns to action Dec. 12, when it hosts Michigan State in a 2 p.m. showdown at the Lewellen Aquatic Center.
