
Women?s Swimming & Diving Scores 172-102 Win Over EIU

MUNCIE, Ind. - - Utilizing victories in 15 of 16 events, the Ball State women's swimming and diving team turned in a complete team effort to top Eastern Illinois 172-102 Friday evening at the Lewellen Aquatic Center.
Overall, the women's squad boasted nine individual event winners on the day, with five student-athletes winning two events each. With the win, Ball State improves to 2-3 (1-3 Mid-American Conference) on the year.
Leading the way for the Cardinals were senior diver Lisa Maertin (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln Way-Central) and senior breaststroker Emily Karwoski (Zionsville, Ind./North Central H.S.). Maertin swept the diving events, scoring 265.73 on the one-meter board and 263.10 on the three-meter board. Karwoski swept the breaststroke events with times of 1:07.22 in the 100 and 2:26.22 in the 200.
Also scoring a pair of event victories for the Cardinals were junior Maria Gramelspacher (Jasper, Ind./Jasper H.S.) and sophomores Sara Hostetler (Vincennes, Ind./Jasper H.S.) and Elizabeth Spilman (Bristol, Ind./Northridge H.S.).
Gramelspacher won the 100 (57.42) and 200 fly (2:07.33), Hostetler took top billing in the 200 back (2:08.22) and 200 IM (2:14.93), while Spilman won the 200 (1:56.44) and 500 (5:13.88) freestyle.
The Cardinals opened the meet with sophomore Nicole Saulters (Highland, Ind./Highland H.S.), Karwoski, Gramelspacher and junior Katie Bylsma (Westfield, Ind./Pinckney H.S.) combining to win the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:48.90.
Senior Mary Ehresman (Lafayette, Ind./Jefferson H.S.) followed with a first-place clocking of 10:44.27 in the 1000 freestyle at Ball State took control of the meet early.
Also scoring individual wins on the day for the Cardinals were Saulters in the 100 back (59.65), freshman Jennifer Miles (Fishers, Ind./North Central H.S.) in the 50 freestyle (25.30) and Bylsma in the 100 freestyle (53.85).
The Ball State women's swimming & diving team returns to action Saturday, with it travels to IUPUI for a 1 p.m. quad meet which also including St. Louis and Western Illinois.
