Women's Swimming & Diving Travels To Akron and Buffalo

MUNCIE, Ind. - - The Ball State women's swimming & diving team returns to the pool this weekend with a pair of road contests beginning with a 5 p.m. dual meet Friday at Akron. Saturday, the women's squad will join the men for a 1 p.m. swim at Buffalo.
The BSU women's squad enters the weekend with a 1-1 (1-1 Mid-American Conference) record after splitting a pair of home meets last weekend.
After a season-opening 155-143 loss to Toledo last Friday (Oct. 30), the Cardinals rebounded with a 153-141 victory over Bowling Green Saturday (Oct. 31).
Overall, eight different BSU swimmers or divers are ranked in the top 10 among all MAC student-athletes in their respective events after last weekend.
After collecting four individual victories in the first two meets, BSU sophomore Sara Hostetler (Vincennes, Ind./Jasper H.S.) finds herself ranked in the top seven in the MAC in three events. She is fifth in both the 200 backstroke (2:07.48) and the 200 butterfly (2:07.99), while ranking 7th in the 100 butterfly (58.13).
Senior diver Lisa Maertin (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln Way-Central H.S.) is the top-ranked BSU athlete, holding the No. 2 slot in 3-meter diving (277.57) and the No. 4 position on the 1-meter board (259.12)
Sophomore diver Christina Riordan (Homewood, Ill./Homewood Flossmoor) is not far behind, ranking third on the 3-meter board (266.92) and seventh in the 1-meter event (240.37).
Sophomore Whitney Adams (Danville, Ind./Danville H.S.) and junior Jessica Elzinga (Holland, Mich./West Ottawa H.S.) also hold top 10 positions in diving, ranking 6th in 3-meter (233.87) and ninth in 1-meter (220.87), respectively.
Back to the pool, senior Emily Karwoski (Zionsville, Ind./North Central H.S.) ranks ninth in both the 100 breaststroke (1:07.69) and 200 breaststroke (2:26.22).
Other BSU swimmers holding top 10 rankings are senior Mary Ehresman (Lafayette, Ind./Jefferson H.S.) and sophomore Nicole Saulters (Highland, Ind./Highland H.S.) with eight-place rankings in the 200 butterfly (2:08.61) and 100 backstroke (59.35), respectively.
Going back to last season, the BSU women's squad scored a narrow 151-149 home win over Akron (Nov. 7), while falling to Buffalo (Nov. 8) by a score of 160-137.
In the win over the Zips, the Cardinals used wins in the final two individual events and a 2-3 showing in the 200 medley relay to rally from down 129-116. Overall, the Cardinals posted wins in six of the 16 events on the day.
The following night versus the Bulls, Ball State posted just three wins over the 16 events in the setback.
