November 25, 2009 | Men's Tennis
"Austin will be a great addition to our program," says Richards. "He is a very strong, athletic player. I expect him to contribute immediately even though we have no seniors this year. We are very pleased he has decided to play tennis at Ball State and become a member of our tennis family."
Smith is a four star recruit out of five stars on tennisrecruiting.net. He is ranked 133rd in the nation after completing his senior season this fall. Smith owns a No. 16 ranking in the Midwest and was ranked No. 1 in the state as a senior.
Smith continues a family tradition by signing with Ball State. His mother, Terralin Schurr Smith, is a Muncie native and lettered in tennis at Ball State from 1981-84. She played under former head coach Eloise Wiertel. Smith's grandfather Terry Schurr is a retired Ball State professor and lettered for the Ball State men's basketball team from 1956-58.
Ball State men's tennis begins its 2010 season Jan. 17 at Northwestern.
