October 31, 2009 | Football
MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State University football team lost 20-17 to Ohio University in Mid-American Conference action Saturday afternoon at Scheumann Stadium.
"We had nine penalties for 91 yards and I don't think you need to say much more than that," Ball State head coach Stan Parrish says. "We are playing hard and we are anxious for where we will be in the future. These are championship teams we are playing and it is not like we are getting beat 47-0, we are competing."
After falling behind 6-0 heading in the second quarter against Ohio, Ball State scored with 5:16 remaining after a 1-yard run from running back Eric Williams, giving the Cardinals a 7-6 edge over the Bobcats. It was Williams third rushing touchdown of the season.
As time expired in the first half, Ohio kicker Matt Weller nailed a 52-yard field goal to give the Bobcats a 9-7 halftime advantage.
Ball State was the first to score in the second half after kicker Ian McGarvey hit a 22-yard field goal with 6:45 remaining in the third quarter.
With just seconds left in the third quarter strong safety Sean Baker intercepted the ball on the Ohio 1-yard line for his second interception of the season and eighth of his career.
Ohio would get the ball back and regain the lead 12-10 after Weller nailed a 41-yard field goal with 11:27 remaining in the fourth quarter. Weller was 4-for-5 on field goals for the day.
With 5:52 on the clock quarterback Tanner Justice connected on a 35-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Jeremy Hill giving the Cardinals a 17-12 lead over the Bobcats.
The Bobcats answered back quickly after quarterback Theo Scott connected with wide receiver Terrence McCrae for Ohio's first touchdown of the game at the 3:11 mark. Scott would then complete the two-point conversion to McCrae making it a 20-17 ball game.
The Ball State University football team will travel to MAC West Division opponent Northern Illinois Thursday, Nov. 12, in a game to be televised on ESPNU.
