MUNCIE, Ind. - - The Ball State men's volleyball team kicks off its 2009 fall schedule Saturday with the annual Alumni Match starting at 2 p.m. in Worthen Arena. Admission to the contest is FREE.
Under the guidance of 12th-year head coach Joel Walton, the Cardinals return 11 letterwinners from last season's squad which posted an 18-10 (6-4 Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association) record and advanced to the MIVA Tournament Championship match for the second-straight season.
This season Ball State, which became just the second men's volleyball program in NCAA history to eclipse the 1,000 win plateau in 2009, will be led by First Team All-MIVA selection junior J.D. Gasparovic and Second Team All-MIVA honoree senior Ethan Pheister. Gasparovic also earned recognition on the 2009 Volleyball Magazine All-America Second Team.
Saturday's alumni meet is expected to see the return of several 2009 graduates, as well as numerous other BSU standouts. Alumni slated to play this weekend include: Evan Berg (2003-06), Dave Carlson (2005-06), Luis Castera (2005), Ryan Clarke (2006-07), Jary Delgado (2001-04), Ben Irwin (2007-09), Ian Peckler (2005-08), Matt McCarthy (2006-09), Nick Meyer (2004-07) and Mark Termion (2006-09).
The remainder of Ball State's fall schedule includes the Loyola Tournament (Saturday, Oct. 31), the Ball State Fall Tournament (Sunday, Nov. 15) and the IPFW Fall Tournament (Saturday, Nov. 21).
The Ball State men's volleyball team officially opens the 2010 season Jan. 15 with a 7 p.m. MIVA showdown at Loyola.
