October 10, 2009 | Field Hockey
MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State field hockey team suffered a 3-1 loss to Ohio 1 p.m. Saturday at the BSU Turf Field. Despite Ball State leading in all statistical categories, a late rally by Ohio gave the Bobcats the two-goal margin of victory in the final twenty minutes.
Both teams battled back and forth in the first 30 minutes as Ball State led seven shots to four while doubling Ohio's shot on goal attempts. Brittany Hammer compiled three of the seven shots for Ball State. Neither team could break the stalemate until Ohio's extra penalty corner opportunity provided an area for the Bobcats to score late in the first period. Ohio carried that lead into halftime.
Freshman Leann Carroll stopped a three-on-one fast break by the Bobcats near the 18 minute mark in the second period. Minutes later, Morgan Cloutier scored her second goal in two games on a penalty corner opportunity to tie the game at one apiece. Katie Norris and Devanny Kuhn provided the double assist. However, after four minutes of both teams taking shots, the Bobcats regained control with a shot from the top of the circle by Marcy Hull for her second goal of the day.
With less than five minutes remaining in regulation, Ohio sealed the game by scoring a third goal off a fast break down the middle of the field.
The Cardinals move to 3-9 on the season and 1-4 in the Mid-American Conference, while the Bobcats improve to 4-7, 2-2 in MAC play.
