
Gymnastics Team Opens Season with Victory

Ball State's women's gymnastics team, under the direction of second-year head coach Nadalie Walsh, opened its 2009 season with a 190.725 to 184.350 victory at Penn Friday afternoon.
Ball State individuals won every event, including fifth-year senior Teresa Phipps (Rocky Mount, N.C./Rocky Mount H.S.), who won the all-around with a score of 38.325. Phipps won the balance beam with a score of 9.675 plus placed third in the vault with a 9.725.
Bibiana Rodriguez-Lockwood (San Juan, Puerto Rico/Maria Reina H.S.), a Ball State junior, won the bars with a 9.800, while Phipps and freshman Daneen Haba (Collierville, Tenn./Houston H.S.) tied for second with a 9.550. The 9.800 by Rodriquez-Lockwood tied her career high set vs. Western Michigan as a freshman.
Freshman Brittney Emmons (Pace, Fla./Tate H.S.) won the floor with a 9.775 and placed second on the beam with a 9.65 and second on the vault with a 9.75.
Nichole Sleeper (Downers Grove, Ill./South H.S.) tallied a victory on the vault with a 9.875.
Junior Brittney Bauer (Springfield, Mo./Glendale H.S.) placed second on the floor with a 9.55, while freshman Amanda Davies (Plantation, Fla./American Heritage H.S.) was third with a 9.475.
The Cardinals return to action Sun., Jan. 18, at Bowling Green in a 2 p.m. meet.
