Track & Field Fares Well at Gladstein Invitational

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - - The Ball State indoor track and field team turned in several strong individual performances, highlighted by eight top-three finishes, as they competed in the 2009 Gladstein Invitational Friday and Saturday (Jan. 23-24).
In the 60-meter dash, fifth-year senior Amber Williams ( Williams assisted BSU in controlling the 60-meter hurdles, as she finished second (8.73) right behind first-place finisher BSU junior Katie Johnson ( The Cardinals also experienced success in the 600-meter run, led by first-place finisher Megan Bevans ( In relay events, the 4x400 squad of juniors Johnson and Jenna Schmitmeyer ( Sophomore Lindsay Bangert ( Junior Tyra Schantz (Bloomfield, Ind./White River Valley H.S.), competing in the weight throw, finished ninth, with a toss of 43-05. The BSU Indoor Track & Field team returns to action Saturday, when it competes in the Indiana Wesleyan Invitational. DAY ONE RESULTS
On day one of the event, Bishel turned in BSU's top individual finish on the day, posting a second-place finish in the 3000 Meter Invitational race with a time of 9:34.16.
Ade followed with a third-place clocking of 5:07.22 in the Mile Invitational, while junior Lisa Arrowsmith (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson H.S.) placed seventh in the 5000 Meter Run with an effort of 18:24.60.
Schmitmeyer also turned in a solid individual performance, placing ninth in the 400 Meter Dash with a time of 59.70.
In field events, senior Jessica Genovese (Dyer, Ind./Lake Central H.S.) and freshman Ebony James (Mishawake, Ind./Riley H.S.) tied for eighth in the high jump, with leaps of 1.55m. Junior Megan Cherry (Hobart, Ind./Hobart H.S.)) placed seventh in the triple jump (10.66m), while sophomore Jerrica Edmonds (Milwaukee, Wis./Franklin H.S.) finished right behind her in eighth (10.65m).
In the shot put, Stovall paced a trio of Cardinals with an 11th-place toss of 11.40. Sophomore Lauren Cleaver (Fort Wayne, Ind./Homestead H.S.) placed 13th (10.49) and Lorenz placed 14th (10.32m).
In prelim action, Williams earned the top seed in the 60 Meter Hurdles with a time of 8.59, while qualifying second in the 60 Meter Dash with a clocking of 7.62.

MEET PREVIEW
MUNCIE, Ind. - - The Ball State women's track and field team will look to continue its early season success this weekend when it travels to Bloomington, Ind. for the Gladstein Invitational, a two-day event that begins Friday, Jan. 23 at noon and finishes Saturday.
The Cardinals, who will compete against over 1,200 athletes this weekend, opened their season last Saturday (Jan. 17) with a third-place finish at the Bowling Green State University Challenge. The event featured two Cardinals capturing first-place finishes, with fifth-year senior Amber Williams (Fort Wayne, Ind./Concordia Lutheran H.S.) winning the 60-meter hurdles (8.45) and junior Ali Bishel (Chesterton, Ind./Chesterton H.S.) finishing first in the 5,000-meter run (16:55.46). Both marks lead the Mid-American Conference in their respective categories.
BSU tallied four other top-three finishes at the BGSU Challenge. Williams, in her first meet back from redshirting in 2008, also notched a second-place finish in the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.28, ranking third in the conference. Junior Katie Johnson (Evansville, Ind./Harrison H.S.) recorded a second-place finish in the 60-meter hurdles (8.74), which is also the second-best time in the MAC.
Junior Jenna Schmitmeyer (Celina, Ohio/Celina H.S.) clocked a time of 59.71 to place second in the 400-meter dash and was a part of the 4x400 relay team that slotted third (4:03.91).
