Indiana Sweeps Women's Volleyball
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - - After a promising start, which saw the Ball State (3-10) women's volleyball team score the first four points, the Cardinals suffered a 3-0 (25-17, 25-18, 25-16) setback to Indiana (8-3) in its second match of the TIS Bookstore Invitational Friday night at University Gym.
BSU's offensive woes continued on the day, as the Hoosiers limited the Ball State attack to 27 kills and a .057 rate of success.
Alisha Green (Country Club Hills, Ill./Hillcrest H.S.) paced the BSU offense with seven kills, while Hannah Sullivan (New Albany, Ind./New Albany H.S.) and Elaina Kakatolis (Arcanum, Ohio/Franklin Monroe H.S.) each tallied six markers.
On the opposing side, Indiana's Erica Short smashed 18 kills to help IU finish the match with a .326 hitting mark. Ashley Benson added nine kills for the Hoosiers, while Juli Pierce paced all players with 12 digs.
Kaylee Schembra (Indianapolis, Ind./Roncalli H.S.) led the Cardinals with nine digs.
Ball State jumped out fast in the opening set, scoring the first four points, only to see the Hoosiers rally back with five-straight points of their own to pull ahead 5-4. After the teams battled to a 6-6 tie, IU posted another five-point run to build an 11-6 advantage. From there, Indiana went on to win the frame 25-17 on a BSU attack error.
Indiana carried over the momentum early in the second game, pulling ahead 4-2, before the Cardinals tied the set at six. Jennifer Boyd (Evans City, Pa./Seneca Valley H.S.) and Kakatolis combined for a block in the next play, while a Julie Breivogel (Boonville, Ind./Boonville H.S.) gave Ball State a brief 8-6 edge.
The Hoosiers responded with the next four points, climbing ahead 10-8, only to see a pair of errors knot the score at 10. However, the Cardinals were not able to capitalize on the errors, as they fell behind by five points at 18-13, before dropping the set 25-18.
Kills from Sullivan and Green, as well as a service ace from Christie Waters (Muncie, Ind./Burris Laboratory School) help BSU pull ahead 3-1 to open the third set. Unfortunately, the come-back victory was not meant to be, as IU rallied off the next six points and never looked back, winning the stanza 25-17.
Ball State concludes play in the TIS Bookstore IU Invitational Saturday afternoon with a 12:30 p.m. first serve versus George Mason.
Volleyball Opens IU Invite With 3-0 Loss To Cincinnati
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - - The Ball State women's volleyball team opened play in the 2008 TIS Bookstore IU Invitational with a 3-0 (25-16, 25-20, 25-14) setback to Cincinnati Friday morning at Indiana's University Gym.
The Bearcat's defense kept the Ball State (3-9) offense in check for much of the match, limiting BSU to a season-low 24 kills, while keeping BSU's top overall attacker Alisha Green (Country Club Hills, Ill./Hillcrest H.S.) in check with just six kills on 11 swings.
Julie Breivogel (Boonville, Ind./Boonville H.S.) led the Cardinals with seven kills, while Hannah Sullivan (New Albany, Ind./New Albany H.S.) added four.
Cincinnati (7-3) was paced offensively by Stephanie Niemer and her 14 markers, while Kelsey Brandl and Missy Harpenau added nine kills each and Jessie Nevitt earned eight.
The Bearcats, which roster features seven players 6-0 or taller, held a 9 to 2 advantage in team blocks, while holding a 35 to 29 lead in digs. BSU freshman libero Kaylee Schembra (Indianapolis, Ind./Roncalli H.S.) paced all players with 11 digs in the contest, while UC's Harpenau added 10 digs.
In the opening set, the teams battled to a 13-13 tie before a service ace from Brittany McGinnis (Fraser, Mich./Fraser H.S.) gave the Cardinals a brief 14-13 advantage. Unfortunately, three straight kills from Nevitt helped the Bearcats rally off 12 of the final 14 points as they went on to win the frame 25-16.
Set two saw the Cardinals jump out to a 3-1 advantage, thanks to a kill from Kakatolis and a pair of UC attack errors. BSU continued to hold a slim one-point lead at the 13-12 mark, off a Breivogel kill, only to see the Bearcats rally off the next three points. The Cardinals managed to stay within two points at 22-20, only to see Cincinnati score the final three points and win the frame 25-20.
With momentum on their side, the Bearcats jumped out to an 8-1 lead in the third set and never looked back, winning the frame 25-14.
Ball State continues play in the TIS Bookstore IU Invitational later this evening, with a 7:30 p.m. first serve versus tournament host Indiana.
