BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - - The Ball State women's volleyball team ended play in the TIS Bookstore IU Invitational with a 3-0 (25-23, 25-23, 25-20) sweep of George Mason Saturday afternoon at Indiana's Assembly Hall.
With the victory, the Cardinals improve to 4-10 overall, while the Patriots drop to 4-9.
Julie Breivogel (Boonville, Ind./Boonville H.S.) paced all players in the contest with 11 kills, while tying for match-high honors with teammate Alyssa Rio (Wayne, Ill./St. Francis H.S.) with three service aces.
Adding some excitement in the victory was BSU libero Kaylee Schembra (Indianapolis, Ind./Roncalli H.S.), who not only tallied a match-high 14 digs, she also recorded the set-winning kill in game two.
Elaina Kakatolis (Arcanum, Ohio/Franklin Monroe H.S.) added eight kills in the win, while Alisha Green (Country Club Hills, Ill./Hillcrest H.S.) smashed seven.
Rebecca Walter was George Mason's top all-around player, collecting team-highs of eight kills and eight digs in the loss.
Despite three early service aces, which gave the Cardinals an early 7-5 advantage in set one, the Patriots rallied off the next six points to force BSU into a timeout. After the break, a GMU attack error followed by a block from Kakatolis and Charde' Phillips (Elyria, Ohio/Elyria H.S.) and a Phillips kill brought the Cardinals within one at 11-10.
Ball State managed to tie the set at 13 moments later, off a kill from Hannah Sullivan (New Albany, Ind./New Albany H.S.), before taking a 14-13 edge of a service error. The score remained close at the 23-23 mark, before back-to-back Kakatolis kills ended the set at 25-23.
George Mason held the advantage through much of the second frame, and looked poised to win the frame with a 20-16 lead. However, an attack error, followed by a block from Sullivan and Green helped the Cardinals rally off the next four points and tie the set at 20.
After the teams battled to their second-straight 23-23 tie, a George Mason attack error gave BSU set point. The Cardinals would not disappoint, as a Schembra overpass just cleared the net and landed on the Assembly Hall hardwood floor.
Set three opened with the teams playing to a 2-2 tie before back-to-back Breivogel kills sparked a 10-2 Ball State run, giving the Cardinals a 12-4 edge. BSU would cruse to victory from there, pulling ahead by 10 points at 17-7, before winning the frame 25-10 on a kill from Green.
The Ball State women's volleyball team opens Mid-American Conference play next weekend, when Central Michigan and Eastern Michigan visit Worthen Arena for Friday and Saturday matches, respectively. Both matches are set for 7 p.m.
