Ball State dominated the early portion of the opening set, scoring the first five points and playing to a nine-point advantage at the 14-5. During the run, Green smashed four kills for BSU, while McGinnis capped the run with a service ace. The Cardinals' maintained a seven-point advantage at the 17-10 mark, only to see UTSA's Huskey come to life with six kills and an ace of her own to help the Roadrunners tie the score at 21-21.
After the teams traded the next two points, a Kakatolis kill and a Green solo block gave BSU set point at 24-22. A kill from Rowland gave UTSA one more change, but the team's libero Jewasko chucked an over pass attempt into the net, allowing Ball State to escape with a 25-23 opening-set victory.
Set two opened with the teams battling to a 3-3 tie, before a 6-2 run led to a 9-5 Texas-San Antonio advantage. BSU was able to capitalize on a pair of UTSA errors, surrounding a Kakatolis kill, to cut the gap to 9-8, before tying the set moments later at 11-11. The Roadrunners were able to regain a three-point lead at 19-16, and maintained the spread at 21-18.
BSU scored the next two points, thanks to kills from Breivogel and Boyd, but Texas-San Antonio scored the following three points on the way to winning the set 25-22.
The Roadrunners carried over the momentum from the second set, as a pair of kills each from Huskey and Rowland allowed them to build a 4-1 lead to open the third frame. UTSA extended its lead to seven points at 14-7, forcing the Cardinals to call timeout, before going on to win the game 25-15.
Neither team was able to gain a clear in set four, as the two combatants battled to a 19-19 tie. However, a pair of costly BSU attack errors allowed the Roadrunners to pull ahead 21-19. After a timeout, Green and Kakatolis combined for a block to get BSU within one again, but UTSA rallied off four of the final five points to capture the match and tournament championship.
CHICAGO, Ill. - - Thanks to a strong offensive performance from junior Elaina Kakatolis (Arcanum, Ohio/Franklin Monroe H.S.), the Ball State women's volleyball team scored a 3-1 (25-23, 25-20, 24-26, 25-22) victory over tournament host DePaul Saturday afternoon in its second match of the DePaul Invitational.

In addition to Kakatolis, three other BSU attackers finished the contest with double-digit kills, led by Alisha Green's (Country Club Hills, Ill./Hillcrest H.S.) team-high 16. Hannah Sullivan (New Albany, Ind./New Albany H.S.) added 13 markers, while Julie Breivogel (Boonville, Ind./Boonville H.S.) tallied 10.
Setter Brittany McGinnis (Fraser, Mich./Fraser H.S.) was BSU's top defender, as she collected her second double-double of the tournament with match-highs of 46 assists and 17 digs.
After falling behind 3-1 to open the match, a block from McGinnis and Green sparked a three-point run with gave the Cardinals a 4-3 edge. The hosts rallied to tie the set on the next play, only to see BSU respond with six of the next eight points, including a pair of service aces from Breivogel, forcing the Blue Demons to call their first timeout trailing 10-6.
The Cardinals eventually built a six-point advantage at the 18-12 mark, only to see DePaul claw back within one at 22-21. After committing a pair of errors to bring the Blue Demons within a point, Green stopped the hosts' momentum with a huge smash down the middle. BSU reached set point, 24-22, two points later on a kill from Breivogel, before a BSU attack error and a DePaul service error ended the set at 25-23 in favor of the Cardinals.
Green and Sullivan opened the second set with back-to-back kills, while a block from Green and McGinnis gave BSU an early 3-0 edge in the frame. DePaul responded with six of the next eight points to claim its only lead of the set at 6-5. Kills from Breivogel and Kakatolis helped the Cardinals regain the momentum, as BSU pulled ahead 12-9 to force a timeout.
Green and Sullivan smashed kills coming out of the minute break to extend the BSU edge to 14-9. The hosts would get no closer than three points the rest of the set, which was capped by a kill from McGinnis at 25-20.
The Blue Demons, paced by three early kills from Cullen, were determined to extend the match to a fourth set, scoring four of the first five points in game three, only to have a pair of kills from Kakatolis, a Green marker and a block from Green and McGinnis tie the score at 5-5. The two teams then battled to an 11-11 tie, before two more Breivogel aces gave the Cardinals a 13-11 lead and forced another DePaul timeout.
An ace from Alyssa Rio (Wayne, Ill./St. Francis H.S.) pushed the Ball State advantage to three points at 16-13. The lead was short-lived, however, as two more Cullen kills helped DePaul rally back and take an 18-17 advantage. With the score knotted at 19, a Breivogel kill put the Cardinals ahead again, while a McGinnis ace extended the advantage to 21-19.
After back-to-back service errors made the score 22-20, DePaul's Jacie Fiedler scored kills on two of the next four plays to help tie the score at 23, while forcing BSU to use its final timeout. Kakatolis pounded the McGrath Arena hardwood floor to give BSU match point after the brake, but a BSU service error, followed by a Cullen kill and a block assists from Lauren Blasi and Ashley Graham stymied the Cardinals first opportunity at victory.
The fourth frame started with the teams battling to a 6-6 deadlock, before a pair of DePaul errors, surrounding a Sullivan kill, helped the Cardinals pull ahead 9-6 and force a timeout. The Blue Demons scored the first two points out of the break, but kills from Kakatolis on two of the next three plays helped Ball State regain the momentum and build an 18-12 edge.
A kill from Dlasi and a pair of markers from Fiedler gave DePaul the next three points and forced BSU to use its first timeout at 18-15. A swing from Jennifer Boyd (Evans City, Pa./Seneca Valley H.S.) found the hardwood floor to stop the DePaul momentum for a moment, but the hosts battled back to tie the set at 21-21. After a crucial service error from the home team, Christie Waters (Muncie, Ind./Burris Laboratory School) smashed a service ace to push the score to 23-21.
Cullen tried to give DePaul life with a kill on the next play, but Green gave BSU its second chance at match point, before Boyd ended the match with her third kill of the set.
