Men's Tennis Advances To MAC Championship Final Match

DeKalb, Ill. - Freshman Shaun Bussert's three set victory (6-3, 2-6, 7-6) over Tyler Sonkin at No. 5 singles clinched Ball State's 4-3 win over Toledo at the Mid-American Conference Championships Friday evening at Northern Illinois, advanching them to the final match against top-seeded Western Michigan.
In doubles action Bussert alongside teammate Joe Vallee won the first match of the day at No. 3 doubles after posting a 8-3 victory over Toledo's Tyler Sonkin and Wade Ward. The Cardinals No. 1 doubles tandem of Jose Perdomo and Jorge Rodriguez earned Ball State the doubles point after defeating the Rockets twosome of Chris Clark and Sven Burus, 8-5.
Heading into singles play with a 1-0 edge over Toledo, the Cardinals lost at No. 1 singles which allowed Toledo to even the score.
Toledo would then take a 2-1 lead after Rodriguez dropped his match to N. Likitkumchorn at No. 4 by a score of 6-2, 6-4. At No. 3 singles Berryman came through for Ball State with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Burus to even the score 2-2.
The Cardinals would lose at No. 6 but would tie things up again with the Rockets after Eduardo Pavia's defeat at No. 2 singles against Chris Clark.
The No. 2 seed Ball State men's tennis team finds themselves in a familiar spot as they advance to the final match of the MAC Tournament for the fourth year in a row against the No. 1 seed Western Michigan Saturday, April 26 at 1 pm. With a win the Cardinals will earn the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
