DEKALB, Ill. - The Ball State University gymnastics team (0-4, 0-3 MAC) fell to Northern Illinois (2-1, 2-1 MAC) on Sunday afternoon at the NIU Convocation. NIU defeated the Cardinals by a score of 192.400 to 188.625.
Senior Erica Gilkerson (North Branch, Minn./North Branch) tied for a third place showing on vault with a final score of 9.725. Sophomore Laura Shockey (Bedford, Texas/Trinity) captured a 9.650 on vault tying her career record.
Newcomer Paige Oswalt (Mooresville, Ind./Mooresville) performed a 9.525 on bars earning the best score out of all the Cardinals.
Gilkerson continued competing strong with a fourth place finish on beam (9.550). Gilkerson ended the meet with a tie for third on floor with a score of 9.750.
Ball State gymnastics returns home to Irving Gym, Friday, Feb. 8. The Cardinals take on Bowling Green at 6 p.m. as part of Think Pink Weekend. The meet is designed to raise awareness for both breast and cervical cancer. BSU gymnastics will also welcome back its alumni for that meet. Former BSU gymnast Sarah Mikrut will be present before she is inducted to the Ball State University Athletics Hall of Fame that same evening.
