
Women?s Swimming & Diving Drops MAC Opener At Toledo

TOLEDO, Ohio - - The Ball State women's swimming & diving team opened Mid-American Conference action with a 168-125 setback to Toledo Friday night at the UT Rec Center.
Lisa Maertin, Alanna Bader and Mary Ehresman were the only individual event winners for the Cardinals in the meet, with Maertin scoring 253.35 to capture first in the 1-meter diving event, Bader taking home the top spot in the 100 Butterfly with a clocking of 59.21 and Ehresman capturing first in the 400 IM with a 4:38.08.
Overall, Ball State won four of the 16 events, as they also took home first in the 200 Freestyle Relay as Katie Bylsma, Lauren Harger, Maria Gramelspacher and Nicole Saulters combined for a time of 1:39.41.
In addition to the event victories, Elizabeth Spilman placed second in the 1000 freestyle, clocking in with an effort of 10:49.03. Emily Haifley and Gramelspacher took home runner-up status in the 100 Breaststroke (1:06.95) and 200 Butterfly (2:12.34), respectively, while Christina Riordan completed a 1-2 BSU finish in the 1-meter diving event with a score of 218.40.
Riordan was also BSU's top performer on the 3-meter diving board, collecting 220.28 points to place second overall in the event.
The Ball State women's swimming & diving team returns to action tomorrow afternoon with a 1 p.m. swim at Bowling Green.

MUNCIE, Ind. - - The Ball State women's swimming & diving program opens Mid-American Conference action this weekend when it visits Toledo for a 5 p.m. Friday swim-off with the Rockets.
Saturday, the Cardinals return to the pool for another MAC showdown, visiting Bowling Green for a 1 p.m. contest.
The last time BSU was in action, the Cardinals took second out of four teams at the Indiana Intercollegiates hosted by Purdue (Oct. 18). The host Boilermakers won the meet, while BSU topped both Indianapolis and IUPUI.
Lauren Harger was BSU's top performer of the meet, collecting the Cardinals' only first-place effort with a clocking of 1:06.80 in the 100 breaststroke. She also placed ninth in the 50 freestyle (25.41), while helping guide the 200 medley relay team to a second-place clocking of 1:49.78.
Last season, the Cardinals opened the MAC season with a 212-88 setback to Toledo, while earning a 193-107 victory over Bowling Green.
In the meet versus the Rockets, Maria Gramelspacher picked up BSU's first of two event wins on the afternoon, clocking in with a time of 2:07.48 in the 200 butterfly. She also combined with Addison Del Rio, Kelly Johnson and Katie Bylsma to take home second in the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 3:36.42.
The story was different the following day, as BSU logged first-place efforts in 11 of the 16 events versus the Falcons. Meghan Patterson got the Cardinals started with a time of 10:40.30 in the 1000 freestyle, topping the next closest competitor by almost 10 seconds.
Gramelspacher collected a pair of wins in the meet, with times of 1:55.44 in the 200 freestyle and 58.26 in the 100 butterfly. Other Cardinals looking to defend event victories over Bowling Green including; Megan Ploetz (2:08.32 in the 200 butterfly), Bylsma (25.14 in the 50 freestyle), Emily Husrt (2:25.85 in the 200 breaststroke), Sarah Kehe (5:15.38 in the 500 freestyle) and Lisa Maertin (261.52 in 3-meter diving).
BSU's 200 freestyle relay squad of Gramelspacher, Del Rio, Bylsma and Huang rounded out the event with a first-place effort of 1:39.46.
