BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - - The Ball State women's swimming & diving team suffered its second-straight Mid-American Conference setback Saturday afternoon, dropping a tight 160-140 decision to Bowling Green at Cooper Pool.
In the loss, the Cardinals (1-2, 0-2 MAC) collected the top spot in five of the 16 events, with freshman Emily Haifley dominating the breaststroke events, scoring first in both the 100 and 200-yard events.
In the fifth event of the meet, Haifley got the Cardinals into the win column for the first time with a time of 1:06.49 in the 100 breaststroke, while teammate and senior Lauren Harger collected second with a clocking of 1:07.28.
BSU's diving corps posted a 1-2-3-4 finish on the 1-meter board in the eighth event, as freshman Christina Riordan posted a score of 253.44. Junior Lisa Maertin placed second with a score of 250.28, while sophomore Whitney Johnson (224.47) and freshman Whitney Adams (208.66) followed.
Haifley picked up her second individual victory of the day in the 200 breaststroke, posting a time of 2:25.23, to beat her closest competitor by almost a second. Junior Mary Ehresman followed with a first-place time of 5:09.47 in the 500 freestyle, getting the Cardinals within striking distance of the meet victory after 12 events.
However, the Cardinals were only able to capture one more win in the final four events, when Maertin (265.96) and Riordan (253.65) collected first and second, respectively, on the 3-meter diving board.
In addition to her first-place swim in the 500 freestyle, Ehresman turned in runner-up finishes in the 1000 freestyle (10:32.55) and the 200 butterfly (2:09.71).
The Ball State women's swimming & diving team returns to action at 6 p.m. next Friday (Nov. 7) when Akron visits the Lewellen Aquatic Center for BSU's first home meet of the year.
