Men's Tennis Completes Day One Of Action At Ball State Invitational

MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State University men's tennis team concluded their first day of action at the 30th Annual Ball State Invitational Friday, with freshman Jon Wegener (Muncie, Ind./Heritage Hall Christian) advancing to the men's singles Flight C finals.
Sophomore Eduardo Pavia (Carolina, Puerto Rico) started the day off with a 6-7 (5), 6-3, 1-0 (9) win in Flight A singles over Jeremy McClelland of Duquesne. Pavia would then drop his match in the round of 16 to Pjotrs Necajevs of Detroit Mercy.
In Flight B singles freshman Zane Smith (Greenwood, Ind./Center Grove) captured a first round victory over Daniel Tobar of Illinois State, 5-7, 7-5, 1-0 (10). Smith later fell to Northern Illinois' Javier Bernabe in the round of 16.
Wegner earned two victories on the day passing the rounds of 32 and 16. Wegner took a first round win over Wright State's Bryon Wowchuk, 6-1, 6-1. He would then defeat Zach Ervin of Butler in the round of 16 by a score of 7-6 (2), 6-3.
In consolation action in Flight B action Dave Thomas (Pembroke, Bermuda) and Derek Carpenter (Ft. Wayne, Ind./Southside) both won their consolation matches.
In doubles action sophomore Shaun Bussert (Decatur, Ga./Decatur) and teammate Smith defeated Steve Herchko and McClelland of Duquesne, 8-5 in Flight B.
Ball State men's tennis will continue its competition Saturday at Cardinal Creek Tennis Center and Lucina Hall beginning at 8:30 a.m.
