October 11, 2008 | Field Hockey
MUNCIE, Ind. ? The Ball State field hockey team held Central Michigan's Samantha Sandham scoreless, but could not fill a two-goal deficit in the 3-1 loss Saturday.
The Cardinals notched their first goal in three games on Senior Day, however, Central Michigan's tough defensive showing allowed Ball State to account for only four shots compared to the Chippewas' 13.
Amanda Lucik provided two goals for Central Michigan in the first six minutes putting the Chippewas up 2-0 at halftime.
Senior Melanie Pasillas attempted the first penalty shot of the season for the Cardinals but Central Michigan's goalkeeper Melinda Curran stopped it to earn her second save of the game.
Both teams did not score over the next 43 minutes, but it was the Chippewas who made the most of their scoring opportunities with 11 shots on goal to the Cardinals' three.
Forward Andrea Marais provided the third goal for Central Michigan on a breakaway with 20 minutes remaining.
In a last attempt for a Ball State comeback freshman midfielder Devanny Kuhn (Louisville, Ky./Sacred Heart Academy) scored her first career goal off a penalty shot in the final 12 minutes of regulation. However, that would be the last goal of the day for both teams.
Goalkeeper Tiffany Shifflett managed to earn eight more saves in the net this afternoon for the Cardinals, putting her at 224 saves for her career.
Ball State (1-11 overall, 0-4 MAC) will host Miami (8-4 overall, 2-2 MAC) 1 p.m. Sunday. The game will be broadcast live on WCRD (91.3 FM) as well as on www.ballstateports.com webcasts.
