Maggert Named MAC-West Division Player Of The Week

MUNCIE, Ind. ? Ball State freshman forward Emily Maggert (Paris, Ill./Paris) was named the Mid-American Conference West Division Player of the Week for her efforts in leading the Cardinals to a 2-0 start in MAC play, the conference office announced Monday afternoon.

“We are so proud of the way Emily has stepped up in MAC play,” acting head coach Lisa McDonald said. “We have seen that type of potential all season long in practice and are excited it has carried over into game situations. She has been a solid and consistent contributor in the post all year long, and we only look for bigger and better things to come.”

Maggert burst onto the MAC scene in impressive fashion as she averaged 20 points and 7.5 rebounds in her first two career conference games, both of which she came in as a reserve. She connected on 77.8 percent (14-of-18) from the field in the two games while leading the Cardinals to a pair of road victories.

She scored a career-high 24 points and grabbed nine rebounds in her first career MAC game at Western Michigan. She connected on nine-of-10 from the field in the Cardinals' victory as she was named the Player of the Game by Comcast Local. She scored 17 second half points as the Cardinals out-scored WMU by a 54-39 margin.

She followed that performance up with a 16-point effort at Northern Illinois as she was five-of-eight from the field and six-of-eight from the free throw line. She also grabbed six rebounds in the victory.

She becomes the second Cardinal this season to earn MAC Player of the Week accolades as she joins senior forward Julie DeMuth (Merrillville, Ind./Merrillville) with the distinction. She also becomes the first freshman for Ball State to earn the weekly honor since former Cardinal Johna Goff received the recognition in the 2000-01 season.

Maggert and the Cardinals will return to action Tuesday night as they host MAC-West Division rival Eastern Michigan at Worthen Arena. Game time is set for 7 p.m. in the MAC home opener.
