Field Hockey Makes Strides In Loss At No. 19 Indiana
September 08, 2007 | Field Hockey
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The Ball State field hockey team lost 2-0 Saturday on the road at 19th-ranked Indiana.
Sophomore goalkeeper Tiffany Shifflett made ten saves for the Cardinals in the loss. Sophomore forward Brooke MacGillivary led Ball State (1-5) with three shots on goal, but the Cardinals could not find the back of the cage.
Ball State head coach Annette Payne, however, was pleased with the progress her team made Saturday.
"We did some really good things today," Payne said. "Obviously, the score is not an indicator of that, but this game was good for us in a lot of ways. We had some great forward movement and some great passing."
After a scoreless first half, Indiana's Haley Funk put the Hoosiers on top in the 40th minute, scoring off an assist from Meg O'Connell. Kate O'Connell later added Indiana's second goal of the day on a penalty corner at the 64:33 mark.
Indiana (4-1) had 12 penalty corner chances compared to one for Ball State, and the Hoosiers out-shot the Cardinals 22-9.
"We took some risks today, and sometimes when you do that, you open yourself up on the back end of the ball," Payne said. "But I thought we really did a good job of attacking as a team and defending as a team."
In addition to MacGillivary's three looks, Jodi Mann, Jamie Kahn, Katie Kloeckener and Gretchen Lulow each managed a shot on goal for Ball State.
The Cardinals now have a week off before hosting Miami in the Mid-American Conference opener Saturday, Sept. 15.
