Men's Tennis Finishes Strong In Day One At 29th Annual Ball State Invitational

MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State University men's tennis team ended day one of action at the 29th annual Ball State Invitational which was held at newly renovated Cardinal Creek Tennis Center and Muncie Central High School.
The Cardinals managed to advance two of its three players into the quarterfinal round of the men's singles Flight A bracket. Freshman Eduardo Pavia pulled off the 6-2, 6-3 defeat over Hermann Kuschke of IPFW in his first collegiate match. Pavia then advanced to the quarterfinals with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Milos Romic of Bradley. After receiving a bye, senior Jarrod Epkey won his match 6-3, 6-3 over Evgeny Samoylov of Bradley to advance to the quarterfinals.
Four Cardinals advanced to the quarterfinal round in the Flight B men's singles. Jorge Rodriguez grabbed a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Cleveland State's Steven Wipprecht. Rodriguez then went on to defeat Mark Rutherford of Marquette by a score of 6-3, 6-3. Freshman Shaun Bussert posted a 6-1, 7-6 (6) win over Michael Macara of Bradley and then won in three sets 6-7, 6-4, 10-8 over Javior Bernabe of Indiana State.
The 2006-07 All-Mid-American Conference Freshman of the Year, Bret Berryman, earned a 6-0, 6-4 victory over Northern Illinois' Jimmy Chu while teammate senior Danny Vidal finished the day with a 6-1, 6-0 win over IUPUI's Blake Powers. Vidal then ended the day with a 7-6, 6-2 victory over Sandy Berry of Butler.
In Flight C singles, junior Jimmy Brannon was the lone Cardinal to advance to the quarterfinals after defeating IPFW's Francisco Sigaud, 7-5, 6-4.
Bussert and Rodriguez won in Flight B doubles after defeating the twosome of Arturo Salgado and Sigaud of IUPUI, 8-0.
The Ball State Invitational will continue action on Saturday, Sept. 15 at the Cardinal Creek Tennis Center beginning at 8:30 a.m.
