Former Men?s Tennis Stars Shine At State Championships

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - - The championship match of the 2007 Five Seasons/Aquafina Indiana State Tennis Championships was an all Ball State alumni affair, as No. 1 seed Joe Epkey topped No. 2 seed Matt Laramore 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 Sunday afternoon at the Five Seasons Sports Club.

Epkey, the 2007 Mid-American Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Year, was a two-year letterwinner for the Cardinals from 2006-07. A two-time All-MAC First Team selection, Epkey posted a 14-10 record in spring competition last season, including a 3-1 league mark. During the 2007 MAC Tournament, Epkey went undefeated at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles.

Laramore earned four letters at Ball State from 2002-05. A two-time All-MAC First Team selection and a one-time All-MAC Second Team honoree, Laramore helped guide BSU to MAC regular season and tournament titles in 2003 and 2005.

In doubles action, Epkey teamed up with his older brother Tony Epkey, another Ball State alum, to take second overall, falling to Kevin and Brandon Gill 6-3, 6-2 in the championship match.

Tony Epkey was a two-year letterwinner for the Cardinals from 2005-06. He was also a member of the 2005 MAC regular season and tournament championship team.
