MUNCIE, Ind. - - Ian Peckler (Vernon Hills, Ill./Vernon Hills H.S.), a junior libero on the Ball State University men's volleyball team, has been named to the 2007 American Volleyball Coaches Association All-America Second Team.
Peckler will receive his award tonight at the NCAA Volleyball Championship Banquet at Ohio State. "I am proud Ian was named our program's latest All-American," said BSU head coach Joel Walton. "For the past three seasons, he has anchored our team's ball control as one of our primary passers and leading diggers. This year, Ian's play was critical in many of our team's victories. We counted on him each night to give our setters high quality passes to run our offense."
Peckler, a 2007 All-Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association Second Team selection, concluded the season ranked sixth in the nation with a 2.65 digs-per-game average. His 276 total digs on the year, which ranks as the ninth-best single-season total in school annals, is second among all NCAA Division I/II players entering this weeks' NCAA Championships. After collecting 14 digs in its MIVA Tournament semifinal loss to then-No. 6 Ohio State last Thursday, Peckler raised his career digs total to 750, which ranks sixth on BSU's career digs chart. During the 2007 campaign, Peckler tallied double-figure dig totals in a team-best 14 matches, raising his career total to 37 matches with double-figure digs, trailing only Chris Beerman's (1987-90) career total of 43. Peckler led BSU's passers with a .968 reception percentage in 2007, logging just 24 reception errors in 743 attempts, while recording a perfect mark in 10 matches. He recorded no reception errors in 26 attempts in Ball State's win over then-No. 6 IPFW (Feb. 23), while logging no reception errors in 18 attempts in BSU's upset of then-No. 9 Pacific (March 24). Peckler becomes just the fourth BSU men's volleyball player in school history to be named to the AVCA All-America Second Team, joining Keith Schunzel (2002), Eduardo Ferraz (1995) and two-time honoree Todd Reimer (1994, 95).
