MUNCIE, Ind. - - After guiding the Cardinals to the 2007 Don Shondell/Active Ankle Challenge title, Ball State men's volleyball senior outside attacker Nick Meyer (Cincinnati, Ohio/Moeller H.S.) has been named both the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association Player of the Week and the Sports Imports/AVCA Division I-II Men's Volleyball National Player of the Week, for the week of March 19-25.
Meyer, a three-time MIVA Player of the Week selection this season, is the first BSU men's volleyball player to earn the AVCA's top weekly honor since Keith Schunzel picked it up Jan. 26, 2004. "I am very proud of Nick for continuing to lead our team in what has turned out to be a very difficult year," said head coach Joel Walton. "I am also proud of his teammates for turning in two great performances this weekend to put Nick in the position to win these awards." In the Cardinals' 3-1 victory over George Mason to open the tournament, Meyer paced all players with 25 kills, while hitting .442 (25-6-43). He also logged eight digs, while tying a season-high with five block assists. In Saturday's upset of then-No. 9 Pacific, Meyer smashed a tournament-high 26 kills, while hitting for a .328 (26-7-58) rate of success. He logged 10 digs in the win for his fourth kill/dig double-double of the season. Meyer also ended the night with a career-high tying two solo blocks, plus two of BSU's four service aces. For the week, Meyer averaged 5.67 kills, 2.0 digs, 0.89 total blocks and 6.44 points per game, while posting a .376 (51-13-101) attack percentage. Over his career, Meyer has tallied 1,273 kills to rank seventh in the 44-year history of men's volleyball at Ball State. The all-time BSU career kills record is 2,041 set by Todd Reimer (1992-95). Meyer also raised his career total to 67 matches with double-figure kills to rank seventh on BSU's all-time list. In addition, he has tallied 20-or-more kills in 20 career matches to rank fifth in BSU annals. The No. 15 Ball State men's volleyball team returns to the court Friday, when it hosts Quincy in MIVA action at 7:30 p.m. in Worthen Arena. Admission to the match is FREE.
