Nick Meyer Earns Second-Straight Player Of The Week Award
February 13, 2007 | Men's Volleyball
Meyer picks up the award for the fifth time in his career, after earning the honor twice last season and once in 2005.
"Nick continues to be a strong leader for our team," said head coach Joel Walton. "He is doing a great job both offensively and defensively. Overall, I feel our wins last weekend were a team effort. Our whole team played their roles well and that helped us earn some individual honors."
Meyer, who was named the Most Outstanding Player of the 2007 Volleyball Hall of Fame Morgan Classic, helped the Cardinals capture the tournament title for the second time in school history with 3-0 wins over Rutgers-Newark (30-27, 30-18, 30-18) and Springfield College (30-25, 30-19, 30-24).
In BSU's victory over the Scarlet Raiders, Meyer collected 19 of his match-high 21 kills in the first two games, before being replaced in the line-up early in the third set. In the opening frame, Meyer smashed three kills on four plays to help the Cardinals rally and win the set. He also finished the match with a season-high .586 (21-4-29) attack percentage, while logging four digs, a pair of blocks and a service ace.
In the championship match versus the Pride, Meyer tallied his second double-double of the season, posting 15 kills and 10 digs. He finished the match with a .464 (15-2-28) attack percentage, while adding two solo blocks, three block assists and an ace.
During the Volleyball Hall of Fame Tournament, Meyer averaged 7.08 points, 6.00 kills, 2.33 digs and 1.17 blocks per game while hitting .526.
On the year, Meyer is averaging 5.61 points, 4.87 kills, 1.84 digs and 0.81 blocks per game while hitting .291.
With his double-digit kill effort in both matches, Meyer raised his career total to 59 matches with double-figure kills, which ranks seventh on BSU's all-time list. In addition, Meyer enters the week ranked ninth in school annals with 1,111 career kills.
