February 10, 2007 | Men's Tennis
MUNCIE, Ind. -- The Ball State men's tennis team earned a pair of 7-0 victories Saturday, defeating both Valparaiso and Indianapolis at the YMCA Tennis Center.
The Cardinals earned straight set wins in 10 of the 12 singles matches on their way to improving their record to 3-4 on the season.
"I thought everyone did a good job today," Ball State coach Bill Richards said. "We played with enthusiasm and intensity, and I think we took a step forward as a team today."
Joe Epkey, Aaron Phillips, Jose Perdomo and Tetta Oyama each won two singles matches on the day. Jimmy Brannon and Joe Vallee picked up singles wins against Valparaiso, while Bret Berryman and Jorge Rodriguez earned singles victories against Indianapolis.
The No. 2 doubles team of Phillips and Rodriguez went undefeated on the day, and Vallee anchored Ball State's No. 3 doubles team, partnering with Berryman for a victory against Valparaiso and Brannon for a win over Indianapolis.
The Cardinals dropped only one match the entire day, an 8-7 (4) decision in the No. 1 doubles match against Valparaiso. But Ball State's No. 2 and No. 3 doubles teams earned victories to secure the doubles point.
The No. 1 doubles team of Epkey and Perdomo rebounded with a win in the day's second match as Ball State swept Indianapolis in doubles.
Ball State returns to action Saturday (Feb. 17) with a 1 p.m. match at Kentucky.
