MacGillivary's Hat Trick Lifts Cards Over Missouri State
October 06, 2007 | Field Hockey
MUNCIE, Ind. -- Sophomore forward Brooke MacGillivary scored a career-high three goals Saturday at BSU Turf Field as the Ball State field hockey team rolled past Missouri State, 3-0.
The Cardinals scored two goals in the first 10 minutes and added the third before halftime.
In the cage, sophomore goalkeeper Tiffany Shifflett made three saves on the way to the first shutout of her career.
MacGillivary wasted no time putting the Cardinals on the scoreboard, scoring her first goal off a Jodi Mann assist on a penalty corner in the third minute. Six minutes later, at the 8:35 mark, MacGillivary scored again when Lauren Cruz carried the ball into the circle and found her in front of the cage to put the Cardinals ahead 2-0.
The assist was the fourth of the season for Cruz, who leads the team in that category.
MacGillivary later capped the scoring with her third goal of the day in the 31st minute. She scored off a pass from Gretchen Lulow, who picked up her first collegiate assist on the play.
The hat trick was the first for a Ball State player since Lindsay Quay recorded three goals Oct. 14, 2006 in a victory over Kent State.
MacGillivary entered the game ranked fifth in the Mid-American Conference with five goals. She now owns a team-high eight goals following Saturday's performance.
As a team, Ball State out-shot Missouri State 14-9 and logged nine shots on goal to Missouri State's four.
With the win, the Cardinals improve to 3-9 (1-4 MAC). Missouri State drops to 1-12 (0-3 MAC). Ball State now goes on the road for three straight games starting Friday at Ohio.
