October 28, 2007 | Field Hockey
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- The Ball State field hockey team dominated every offensive statistical category Sunday but came up short on the scoreboard in a 2-1 loss at Missouri State.
The Cardinals tallied 21 shots to eight for Missouri State and 17 shots on goal to the Bears' four. Sophomore forward Brooke MacGillivary logged a game-high seven shots.
Missouri State goalkeeper Kim Kinsella managed to stop 16 of the 17 shots she faced to thwart Ball State's offensive attack. Kinsella did not allow a goal until the final minute when Ball State senior midfielder Lauren Cruz scored her third goal of the season to put the Cardinals on the scoreboard.
Despite facing a deficit in shots, Missouri State built a 2-0 lead before Cruz's goal. The Bears scored late in the first half when Melissa Millin scored off a Sarah Johnson assist to break a scoreless tie. Missouri State then added to its lead on a Melissa Lantz goal in the 47th minute.
In addition to its advantage in shots, Ball State tallied 12 penalty corners to Missouri State's four.
Senior forward Katie Kloeckener added five shots for Ball State, and junior forward Casey Hunsicker chipped in with four.
Ball State finishes the regular season with 5-12 record (3-7 MAC). The Cardinals travel to Oxford, Ohio, this week as the No. 5 seed for the Mid-American Conference Tournament. Ball State will match up Thursday with fourth-seeded Central Michigan at Noon in the tournament's first game.
