OXFORD, Ohio -- Playing on the road for the third consecutive game, the Ball State field hockey team suffered a 3-1 defeat Friday night at Miami.
Sophomore forward Brooke MacGillivary scored the lone Ball State goal in the loss. The MAC goals leader with 15 on the season, MacGillivary has now scored a goal in each of the past four games for Ball State. She has tallied 10 scores over that stretch.
Miami managed 21 shots in Friday's contest to Ball State's seven. Cardinal goalkeeper Tiffany Shifflett managed seven saves in the game.
From an offensive standpoint, the first 30 minutes of the game and the final 35 minutes were very quiet. But it was in those final five minutes of the first half where there was a flurry of goals.
All of the game's four goals were registered in the five minutes before halftime. Starting at the 30:48 mark, Miami picked up three quick goals off the sticks of Kate Snyder, Christine Brightwell and Alyssa Nye.
MacGillivary responded for Ball State with her goal in the 34th minute to cut Miami's lead to 3-1 at halftime, but that ended the scoring for the night.
Junior forward Casey Hunsicker led Ball State in shots with three. MacGillivary and senior midfielder Amanda Pavone each logged two.
With the loss, Ball State falls to 4-11 (2-6 MAC) while Miami improves to 6-10 (4-4 MAC). The Cardinals return to Muncie to host Central Michigan Sunday at 2 p.m. in the team's final regular season home game.
