Gymnastics Defeats Alaska Anchorage

MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State University gymnastics team flipped for pink on Sunday afternoon at Irving Gym, which was a tribute to breast cancer. BSU defeated Alaska Anchorage for its first win of the 2007 season by a score of 189.325 to 186.575.

The Cardinals started the meet strong winning their first event after scoring a 48.225 on vault to Alaska's 47.450. Senior Jenna Tarkington exploded with her vault as she scored a 9.775 which was good for a first place finish.

BSU continued its strong competition with a 47.150 score on bars which was led by freshmen Megan Howard and Allyson McGaha who both tied for second place with a 9.525. McGaha's score was a personal best this season.

Ball State performed well on beam and floor which earned them a clean sweep of all four rounds to earn them a victory. Junior Erica Gilkerson tied her season best on beam with a 9.650 while teammate senior Kelly Watson took top honors on floor with a 9.725. Watson also won the all-around competition after scoring a 38.450 which is a career high for her.

The Ball State gymnastics team travels to Bowling Green on Feb. 3 in Mid-American Conference action. The meet is set to begin at 7 pm.
