The Ball State women's track and field team hosted the Ball State Open at the field sports building in Muncie.
The meet consisted of Ball State and Dayton University with some unattached athletes in the mix. The Cardinals placed high in many events, however there was no team scoring.
This was the first meet for new head coach Randy Heisler.
“For this being my first meet here at Ball State I was very pleased with the great attitude and effort from everyone on the team,” Heisler said.
Ball State started off strong during the field events. Senior Cara Collins won the shot put (42-8) and Ali Zuidervliet placed second in the event (39-7 3/4). Lanae Stovall won the long jump (16-9 3/4) and also placed third in the 60-meter hurdles (9.22)
Amber Williams won the 60-meter hurdles finishing in 8.64. Williams broke the school record in the 60-meter hurdles last season (8.26).
“Individually Amber Williams ran great, almost making a NCAA qualifying mark in the first meet is impressive,” Heisler said.
In the 200-meter dash junior Voni Ferguson won the event in 25.35. Following in a close second was Christina Whitt who finished in 25.85. Seniors Amanda Ponsot and Rose Lehe both won in their specific events. Ponsot won the 800-meter run in 2:21.63 while Lehe won the 1600-meter run in 5:12.11
