Men's Tennis Players Find Success in Summer Competition
July 05, 2006 | Men's Tennis
Ball State senior men's tennis player Joe Epkey (Greenwood, Ind./Center Grove H.S.) recently captured the singles title at the Five Seasons Indiana State Championships in Indianapolis, Ind. With the win, Epkey earns a wildcard into the qualifying round of the RCA Tennis Championships, which are set to begin July 15 in Indianapolis. Epkey defeated fellow teammate Aaron Phillips (Effingham, Ill./Saint Anthony H.S.) 6-4, 6-3 in the championship match of the Five Seasons event. Phillips will be a junior member of Ball State's team this fall after transferring from Indiana State.
Tony Epkey (Greenwood, Ind./Center Grove H.S.), who completed his eligibility at Ball State this past spring, fell to Phillips in the semifinals in the singles competition. However, Tony teamed with brother, Joe, to capture the doubles title at the tournament. The duo defeated Kris Looney and Matt Schiller of Indianapolis 1-6, 6-4, 6-1.
The Ball State men's tennis squad begins fall competition when it hosts the Ball State Fall Invitational Sept. 15 at the Cardinal Creek Tennis Center.
