Bill Howze, who was the varsity basketball head coach at Archbishop Carroll High School in Washington D.C. since 2004, has been named an assistant coach at Ball State University, according to Cardinals' head coach Ronny Thompson.
Howze, who begins his duties immediately, joins Thompson's first Ball State staff along with assistant coaches Steve Flint and Troy Collier, who were each named to their respective positions in April.
"I am excited about bringing Coach Howze on board," Thompson said. "He has a wealth of knowledge on and off the court that I believe will benefit every player on the Ball State team."
Howze, who taught United States history, world history, psychology and sociology at Archbishop Carroll, guided the varsity basketball team to its first winning season in four years in his first year at the helm. His team improved its record by 10 wins in his first season and recorded a semifinal playoff finish. He has coached 12 players who continued their playing careers in college, including Ruben Boumtje-Boumtje who played at both Georgetown and in the National Basketball Association.
A 1994 graduate of the University of Maryland, Howze served as a social studies teacher and assistant varsity basketball, baseball and golf coach at Archbishop Carroll from 1995 to 1999. He was the top assistant for the nationally recognized basketball program, plus helped to establish the school's golf program in 1998. Howze was nominated for Who's Who Among America's Teachers in 1998.
Howze, who has a combined 10 years experience as a coach and professional educator, held social studies teaching positions at Jefferson Junior High School in Washington, High Point High School in Beltsville, Md. and St. John's College High School in Washington, before returning as teacher and head coach at Archbishop Carroll in 2004.
Howze and his wife Shirelle have a nine-month old son, William III.
