Muncie, Ind. - - Ball State men's volleyball junior outside attacker Nick Meyer (Cincinnati, Ohio/Moeller H.S.) has been named to the 2005-06 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District V University Division Men's At-Large First Team as announced today by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Meyer's name will now be placed on the national ballot for the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Men's At-Large Team, which will be announced June 13.
The 2005-06 men's at-large team was voted on by members of CoSIDA from District V, which encompasses Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota and Wisconsin as well as the Canadian provinces of Manitoba and Ontario. To qualify for Academic All-District, student-athletes must hold at least sophomore status at their university, own a minimum grade-point average of 3.2 and be either a starter or key reserve for their team.
Meyer, a junior computer science major with a 3.79 grade-point average, was a First Team All-Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association selection in 2006 after ranking second in the league and seventh in the nation with a 5.44 points-per-game average. During the 2006 campaign, Meyer helped guide the Cardinals to an 11-0 start and a No. 8 ranking in the nation, which was the team's highest ranking since March 9, 2004. Ball State finished the season ranked 12th with a 21-7 overall record.
A starter in 23 of the 25 matches he played in, Meyer ranked ninth nationally with a 4.55 kills-per-game average. He scored double-figure kills in 17 matches, including 20-or-more on six occasions. Meyer smashed a season-high 26 kills in BSU's win at Rutgers-Newark (March 4), while adding a career-high 17 digs at Quincy (March 25). He would go on to collect kill/dig double-doubles in five matches, while finishing the season with a career-best 2.12 digs-per-game average.
Meyer also played a big factor at the net for the Cardinals, collecting a career-best 0.91 blocks-per-game average to help BSU rank second in the MIVA in the category. He recorded at least one block in 24 matches, including a career-best seven at St. Francis (Jan. 15). In addition, he would log 27 aces on the season, including a season-best four vs. Penn State (April 15).
Meyer is just the third men's volleyball player in school history to earn recognition on the Academic All-District V First Team, joining Stephan Stamato (1991) and Bob DiDonato (1993). Stamato went on to earn Academic All-America First Team accolades, while DiDonato was selected to the Academic All-America Third Team.
