Softball Splits at Indiana State
April 20, 2006 | Softball
After four scoreless innings in game one, Ball State notched its first run in the fifth when Sarah McGregor walked and then scored on Kelli Jeziorski's single. The Cardinals added a pair of insurance runs the next inning on Katie Pilger's two-run bomb over the left center field fence. Pilger plated Taylor Yancey who singled with one out earlier in the inning.
BSU outhit the Sycamores 8-6 in the contest. Cortney Patteson and Abby Gross had two hits apiece to lead BSU offensively. Amanda Pick improved to 6-6 on the season, going the distance and striking out three batters.
In game two, Indiana State jumped out to a 2-0 advantage after two complete innings, but BSU immediately responded with one run in the top of the third to cut its deficit by one. The Sycamores matched the Cards with one run in the bottom portion of the inning. BSU and ISU traded runs in the fifth and the Cardinals threatened with a runner in scoring position in the seventh, but came up empty.
BSU scored in the third when Jeziorski doubled and then Pick plated her with another double. Pick added her second double of the game to score Allie Pennock in the fifth. Abby Gross followed with a single putting runners at first and third, but ISU got out of the inning. Jeziorski doubled in the seventh and eventually moved to third, but, once again, ISU was able to retire the side.
"I was really happy with Amanda Pick's performance in game one," BSU head coach Terri Laux said. "She led us on the mound and let our defense support her. Our offense came through at times today, but we are still a little inconsistent."
The Cardinals posted another 8-6 advantage in hits in game two with Jeziorski and Pick leading the way with two hits each. Nicki Hellem took the loss on the mound.
BSU 12-20 overall and 5-7 in the MAC, resumes league play Saturday at Miami with a twinbill beginning at 2 p.m.
