Miami hit three straight singles to load the bases in the top of the second, eventually scoring Chris Nadeau on a Will Reynolds sac fly to center field. The RedHawks grounded into a double play at third base to end the inning.
Ball State struck back and took the lead with two runs in the top of the third, as senior first baseman Brad Miller (Muncie, Ind./Central) singled to left field, driving in junior designated hitter Matt Gard (Muncie, Ind./Central) and senior center fielder Mike Sullivan (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso) from second and third, respectively.
The Cardinals held a 2-1 lead until the top of the seventh inning, when the RedHawks tied it up on an RBI single through the right side by Reynolds, driving in Nadeau once again.
BSU responded immediately with two runs in the bottom of the seventh, as senior catcher Matt Singleton (Ft. Wayne, Ind./Homestead) singled to left center to drive in freshman pinch runner Nate Fields (Cincinnati, Ohio/Anderson) from second base. Senior third baseman C.J. Webb (Mascoutah, Ill./Mascoutah) drove in another run with a double pulled down the left field line to score Singleton and give Ball State its 4-2 lead.
Junior pitcher Ryan DeGeeter (Warsaw, Ind./Warsaw) (2-3) went 6.2 innings, giving up five hits, two earned runs and one walk, while striking out four batters in his seventh start of the season.
Senior relief pitcher Kory Bucklew (Fishers, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern) (3-0) picked up the win after closing out the final seven outs of the game. Bucklew notched one strikeout, while surrendering just one hit.
Miami's Sam Shorts (1-1) suffered the loss after going 6.1 innings, allowing eight hits, three earned runs and a walk, while posting one strikeout.
The Cardinals host Valparaiso (3-14) Tuesday at 3 p.m.
