Meyer Earns Second-Straight MIVA Player of the Week Award

Muncie, Ind. - - For the second-straight week, Ball State junior outside attacker Nick Meyer (Cincinnati, Ohio/Moeller H.S.) has been named the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association Player of the Week - - for the week of April 10-16 - - after helping guide the Cardinals to a near upset of then-No. 10 Penn State last Saturday. The award is the second for Meyer this season and the third of his career.
Meyer is the first player in school history to earn MIVA Player of the Week accolades twice in the same season, as well as just the third player in the league's top division to earn the honor in back-to-back weeks. BSU's three player of the week awards in 2006 - - senior middle attacker Zoran Grabovac (Des Moines, Iowa/Hoover H.S.) earned the award on Feb. 14 - - is a school record, topping the previous mark of two which had happened five times since the honor was initiated in 1998.
In the 3-2 (19-30, 26-30, 30-26, 30-28, 15-11) loss to the Nittany Lions, Meyer slammed a match-high 25 kills while hitting for a .404 (25-6-47) rate of success. In addition, he tallied a match-best 14 digs for his fifth double-double of the season. Meyer finished the contest with 31 total points - - 8.5 points better than any other player.
Meyer also recorded a season-high four service aces, four block assists and a pair of assists in the loss. He finished the contest averaging 6.20 points, 5.00 kills, 2.80 digs, 0.80 aces and 0.80 blocks per game.
On the year, Meyer ranks second in the MIVA and eighth in the nation with a 5.40 points-per game average. His 4.57 kills-per-game average is also second in the league and ninth in the nation. On the year, Meyer has tallied 306 kills, moving his career total to 934, which is the second-best total in school history since rally scoring was instituted for the 2001 season.
The No. 14 Ball State men's volleyball team opens play in the 2006 MIVA Tournament at 7 p.m. Saturday as the No. 3 seed and will host No. 6 seed Mercyhurst in quarterfinal action at Worthen Arena. The remainder of the tournament will be played at No. 1 seed Loyola April 27 & 29.
