Meyer MIVA Player of the Week/Men's Volleyball Climbs Back into Rankings

Muncie, Ind. - - Ball State junior outside attacker Nick Meyer (Cincinnati, Ohio/Moeller H.S.) has been named the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association Player of the Week - - for the week of April 3-9 - - after helping guide the Cardinals to a 3-0 (30-21, 31-29, 30-22) upset of then-No. 14 Ohio State last Friday. The award is the first for Meyer this season and the second of his career.
In the victory over the Buckeyes, Meyer smashed a match-high 19 kills while connecting for a .406 (19-2-32) hitting percentage. Meyer, who tied a season-high with three service aces in the win, also recorded a solo block and a block assists. He finished the night with 7.83 points, 6.33 kills, 1.00 aces and .67 blocks per game.
On the year, Meyer ranks second in the MIVA and eighth in the nation with a 5.34 points-per game average. His 4.53 kills-per-game average is also second in the league and 10th in the nation. On the year, Meyer has tallied 281 kills, moving his career total to 909, which is the second-best total in school history since rally scoring was instituted for the 2001 season.
As a team, Ball State climbed back into the No. 14 slot in the latest CSTV/AVCA Division I-II Men's Volleyball Coaches Top 15 Poll. The Cardinals had attained a No. 8 ranking in the Feb. 13 poll for the team's highest ranking since March 9, 2004, but fell to 10th on Feb. 20 and 12th on Feb. 27 before dropping out of the top 15 on March 6. BSU was No. 9 in the Feb. 6 poll, after spending the previous three weeks at No. 10. Ball State entered the season ranked 14th.
The No. 14 Ball State men's volleyball team will close the 2006 regular season Saturday when it battles No. 10 Penn State in a 7 p.m. first serve at Worthen Arena. The match will also serve as the team's senior night as the Cardinals honor Evan Berg, Dave Carlson and Zoran Grabovac between games two and three.
