February 07, 2006 | Men's Volleyball
Wilberforce, Ohio - - The No. 9 ranked Ball State men's volleyball team pushed its record to 9-0 with a 3-0 (30-2, 30-5, 30-6) victory over the second-year Central State (0-5) Marauders program Tuesday afternoon at Beacom/Lewis Gym.
In its role as a team ambassador for the sport of men's volleyball, the Cardinals broke five school records in the match against the fledgling team, including marks for team attack percentage, team aces, individual aces and margin of victory in a game and a match.
Individually, Mark Termion (Winfield, Ill./Wheaton North H.S.) and Matt McCarthy (Wheaton Warrenville South H.S.) each collected 11 service aces in the contest, bettering the old school record of eight set by Todd Reimer on Jan. 28, 1994 vs. George Mason.
Mark Rumschik (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park H.S.) also landed his name in the record books for attack percentage, hitting for an .800 (12-0-15) rate of success to rank fourth all-time on BSU's single-match charts.
As a team, the Cardinals collected 30 total service aces, more than doubling the previous school record of 14 set vs. Edinboro on
Ball State also set a new school record for team attack percentage by hitting .755 in the contest. On 49 total swings, the Cardinals smashed 38 kills while committing only one attack error. The previous school record was a .696 attack percentage set vs. Eastern Montana on
BSU's 30-2 game-one victory was the team's largest game win under rally scoring, topping a 30-8 game-two edge over the Milwaukee School of Engineering on
Termion would get the ball rolling for the Cardinals in the opening set, guiding the team to a 19-0 lead, which saw six of his school-record 11 aces. After a setting error by the Cardinals gave Central State its first point, the Marauders would commit a service error to give Ball State control of the serve again.
With a 20-1 edge, McCarthy took the ball and ran off eight-straight points to push the lead to 28-1. In the run, McCarthy collected six of his 11 aces, including five-straight at one point, before ending the run with a service error.
Todd Chamberlain (Louisville, Ky./Trinity H.S.) would follow with a kill and a service ace to give BSU its largest margin of victory in a game under rally scoring in school history at 30-2. Rumschik would finish the game with six kills on six swings, while Chamberlain blasted kills on all five of his attempts.
After collecting 13 total aces in the first game, it would not take the Cardinals long to break the record in the second set, as Carlos Ramos (Durado, Puerto Rico/Florida Air Academy) collected an ace on his first career serve. After playing to a 16-4 lead, Termion would score the record-breaking ace on his second serve of a nine-point service run with his seventh ace of the night. Termion would add three more aces in the run to become the first player in school history to record at least 10 aces in a match.
Ahead 24-5 in game two, McCarthy would serve the final six points, recording three aces on the way to up his total in the match at that point to nine. Rumschik would cap the run at 30-5 with his 10th kill of the night on 12 attempts.
The third game started with kills from Ramos, Rumschik and Doug Willmann (St. Lewis, Mo./Francis Howell North H.S.) before McCarthy tallied his 10th and 11th aces in the match. CSU would follow with its only back-to-back points of the night to make the score 5-2, before an 11-2 run gave Ball State a 16-4 edge.
Willmann would then turn in a nine-straight service run to push BSU's advantage to 25-4. He would end his run on a service error after collecting a pair of aces. Ramos would follow with four kills on the next five points, capping his perfect night with eight kills on eight attacks.
Fittingly, Termion would end the match with his 11th service ace of the night to tie McCarthy for the single-match school record and give BSU a 30-6 game-three victory.
In addition to their 11 service aces on the night, McCarthy collected six kills, two digs, a solo block, an assist and hit .600 (6-0-10), while Termion logged a match-best six digs, three kills and an assist.
In addition to his eight kills, Ramos would collect three service aces, three digs and an assist in his first collegiate match, while Willmann posted three kills, two aces and an assist.
Jim Shiel (Indianapolis, Ind./Cathedral H.S.) set the team to its school-record attack percentage, recording a match-best 25 assists. He also logged two digs, a solo block and a kill in the win.
Ted Summers-Torres (San Diego, Calif./University of San Diego H.S.) logged one dig as the team's libero.
As seen in the game scores, the Cardinals dominated in all statistical categories, limiting the host Marauders to a -.105 (
Anthony Jackson and Gemayla Pullins each recorded two kills to pace the Central State offense, while Jackson and Victor Tolbert scored a team-best two digs each.
