No. 10 Men's Volleyball Blanks Quincy 3-0, Improves to 7-0 at Home

Muncie, Ind. - - The No. 10 Ball State men's volleyball team improved to 7-0 at Worthen Arena by cruising to a 3-0 (30-25, 30-22, 30-22) victory over Quincy Friday night. With the win, the Cardinals climb to 13-1 (4-1 Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association), while the Hawks fall to 7-10 (1-5 MIVA).
In the victory, Patrick Durbin (Louisville, Ky./Trinity H.S.) paced the Ball State offense with a team-high 11 kills, while hitting for a .320 (
BSU redshirt freshman Ryan Clarke (Ballwin, Mo./Parkway South H.S.) turned in his best offensive performance of the season, collecting career highs of eight kills and a .417 (
As a whole, senior setter Dave Carlson (Coon Rapids, Minn./Coon Rapids H.S.) guided the Ball State offense to a .309 (48-14-110) hitting percentage, with a match-best 42 assists. He also paced all players with a pair of service aces in the contest, while scoring 10 digs, a pair of solo blocks and a kill.
In the opening set, Quincy jumped out to a 4-2 advantage and would not trail through the 10-10 mark. A block assists from Durbin and Clarke would give the Cardinals their first edge at 11-10, before a service error tied the set at 11 all.
The Hawks would respond with a service error of their own, given Ball State an edge it would hold until the 17-17 mark. Back-to-back kills from Nick Meyer (Cincinnati, Ohio/Moeller H.S.) would put the Cardinals back on top for good at 19-17. Clarke would give Ball State its largest lead of the game at 30-25 by smashing an overpass to the hardwood floor.
The second game started with a Quincy service error which sparked a 5-1 BSU run to start the set. The Hawks would manage to close the gap to two points, at 10-8, before a 10-4 Ball State run capped by twin kills from Evan Berg (Bristol, Wis./Central H.S.) gave the Cardinals an eight-point edge at 20-12.
A Matt McCarthy (Wheaton Ill./Wheaton Warrenville South H.S.) and Berg block would give BSU a nine-point advantage at 28-19, while McCarthy would give BSU game point at 29-21 with one of his nine kills on the night. BSU would win the game at 30-22 on another Quincy service error.
In the third and final set, the teams would battle to a 6-6 tie before a Todd Chamberlain (Louisville, Ky./Trinity H.S.) kill gave BSU the lead for good. The Cardinals would pull ahead by six points at the 17-11 mark before a 4-0 Hawks run drew the visitors within two points at 17-15.
A well timed BSU timeout and a kill from Clarke would put an end to the Quincy run and allow BSU to regain a five-point advantage at 20-15. Mark Rumschik (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park H.S.) capped the 3-0 BSU run with his only kill of the night, dropping an overpass between several defenders.
The Cardinals would take their largest lead of the game, nine points, at 28-19 on a kill from Berg. Four points later, Quincy would end the match at 30-22 with their 15th service error of the match.
In addition to his nine kills, McCarthy would finish the contest with a match-best .500 (
Berg would end the night with eight kills, 11 digs, three total blocks, a service ace and an assist. Meyer would tally six kills, four digs, a solo stuff and an assist in the win.
Chamberlain ended the night with four kills, four digs and a block assists.
BSU libero Ian Peckler (Vernon Hills, Ill./Vernon Hills H.S.) would pace all players with 15 digs.
In addition to his kill in the third game, Rumschik would post for digs. Ted Summers-Torres (San Diego, Calif./University of San Diego H.S.) also saw action in the victory.
In addition to the Cardinals' offense clicking, its defense was too, limiting Quincy to a .159 (42-22-126) attack percentage. BSU also held a 55 to 42 edge in digs and a 9.5 to 4 advantage in total blocks.
Quincy's Joe Moreno paced all players with 14 kills in the match, while Niels Pedersen tallied a team-high 10 digs for the Hawks.
