MUNCIE, Ind. - - Ball State senior Tony Epkey (Greenwood, Ind./Center Grove H.S.) has been named the Mid-American Conference Male Scholar Athlete of the Week, as announced today by the league office.
The MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week honor is presented to a MAC male and female student-athlete who has a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better and performs well during that week's competition. The winners are selected by a group of the conference's faculty athletic representatives.
Epkey, a religious studies major with a 3.750 grade-point average, helped the 69th-ranked BSU men's tennis squad secure wins over two ranked Big Ten opponents last weekend.
In Friday's victory over No. 71 Purdue, Epkey teamed with brother Jarrod at the No. 2 spot for a 9-7 win over Kelubia Mabatah and Griffin Nienberg to secure the doubles point for BSU.
In Sunday's win over No. 60 Indiana, Epkey landed a straight-set 6-3, 6-4 decision over Dara McLoughlin at the No. 3 singles position. Additionally, he paired with brother Jarrod once again, to easily slide past the Hoosiers' Peter Antons and David Bubenicek 8-3 in the No. 2 doubles slot.
Epkey has played an integral role in Ball State's current seven-match winning streak , which includes three victories over ranked opponents -- No. 75 Michigan State, No. 71 Purdue and No. 60 Indiana.
