Muncie, Ind. - - The Ball State swimming & diving program swept instate rival IUPUI Wednesday night at the Lewellen Aquatic Center, with the women (8-3) posting an 147-86 victory and the men (3-4) earning an 141-90 win.
Overall, the women claimed the top spot in 11 of the 13 events, while the men took home first in 10.
The women's team started the day with a victory in the 200 medley relay, as Brittany Sayler, Addison Del Rio, Erika Paul and Abby Arnold combined to clock in at 1:49.41.
Ball State would go on to win the next three events, thanks to Dani Fisher in the 1000 freestyle (10:57.75), Brittany Mishler in the 200 freestyle (1:56.27) and Michelle Huang in the 50 freestyle (24.46). All three clockings were individual season-bests for the swimmers.
Despite posting a season-best time in the 400 individual medley, Alyssa Watkins finished second overall for the Cardinals with a time of 4:45.11.
Paige Vernasco would get the Cardinals back to the top of the pack with a first-place score of 271.35 on the one-meter diving board. BSU would also go on to win the next six events; Del Rio (100 butterfly - 59.32), Mary Brinkoetter (100 freestyle - 54.40), E. Paul (100 backstroke - 1:01.26), Sayler (500 freestyle - 5:09.94) Stephanie Paul (three-meter diving - 311.18) and Lauren Harger (100 breaststroke - 1:08.31).
Del Rio's, Brinkoetter's and Slayer's times were all personal season-best marks.
The women's 200 freestyle relay squad of Ashley VanOsdol, Del Rio, E. Paul and Abby Arnold would also post the top time of the meet at 1:39.63, but did not claim the top spot because it was in exhibition.
The men's squad would also start the day with a win in the 200 medley relay, as Kurtis Leer, Ryan Franklin, Ritchie Caudill and Josh Schum tallied a time of 1:37.31.
Additionally, the men would go on to win the next three events, with Kyle Hembree posting a season-best time of 9:51.16 in the 1000 freestyle, Mark Augustyn swimming to a season-best mark of 1:49.38 in the 200 freestyle and Tyler McQuiston logging a season-best clocking of 21.96 in the 50 freestyle.
The 400 individual medley would see Jim Lullo collect the runner-up slot with a season-best swim of 4:19.80 in the event.
Zach Whitaker would boost the Cardinals back to the top of the podium with a 1-meter diving score of 326.18, while Adam Konopka won the 100 butterfly (53.47), Dustin Fulkerson took home top billing in the 100 freestyle (46.80), Leer swam to first in the 100 backstroke (52.80) and Caudill won the 500 freestyle (4:49.28). All four times were individual season-best marks.
Ryan Franklin turned in BSU's best effort as an exhibitioner in the 100 breaststroke with a clocking of 1:01.99, while the men's 200 freestyle relay (McQuiston, Lullo, Schum and Caudill) swam an exhibition time of 1:28.50, which would have taken the No. 1 slot.
Both the men's and women's squads end the 2005-06 regular season this Saturday with a
