November 22, 2006 | Men's Volleyball
EDEN, N.Y. - - The Ball State men's volleyball team concluded play in last weekend's Preview to the Final Four Tournament with a 2-1 overall record. The Cardinals opened the two-day event with a dominating 3-0 (30-26, 30-20, 30-21) victory over Rutgers-Newark last Saturday. On Sunday, Ball State split a pair of matches, falling to the Collegiate All-Stars 3-1 (31-29, 20-30, 23-30, 24-30) before defeating Mercyhurst 3-0 (30-20, 30-20, 30-23).
In the opening contest of the tournament versus Rutgers-Newark, the Ball State offense exploded for a .513 (50-9-80) rate of success, with freshman Todd Chamberlain (Louisville, Ky./Trinity H.S.) blasting 12 kills and senior Nick Meyer (Cincinnati, Ohio/Moeller H.S.) smashing 11 markers. Defensively, junior libero Ian Peckler (Vernon Hills, Ill./Vernon Hills H.S.) paced the Cardinals with a tournament-high 16 digs.
Despite Meyer recording a BSU preseason-high 20 kills in Saturday's opener versus the Collegiate All-Stars, the Cardinals were limited to a tournament-low .230 (56-27-126) attack percentage in a losing effort. Meyer would also add a team-best nine digs in the contest, while Chamberlain would score 11 kills.
In the final match of the tournament, it was sophomore Ryan Clarke (Ballwin, Mo./Parkway South H.S.) who would pace the offense with 12 kills. Meyer would add seven kills in the contest, while sophomore Justin Orr (Gladstone, Mo./Winnetonka) tallied six markers to help lead the team to a .298 (45-20-84) attack percentage in the win over Mercyhurst. Defensively, Peckler and sophomore Mark Termion (Winfield, Ill./Wheaton North H.S.) tied for team-high honors with seven digs apiece.
Ball State will close its 2006-07 preseason schedule Saturday, Dec. 2 with its annual Alumni Match at 2 p.m. in Worthen Arena.
