2006 Women's Golf Fall Recap
October 23, 2006 | Women's Golf
"After each tournament, it seemed like we would try and put everything together for the next weekend," Mowat says. "We ended up falling short and I really wish we could have had another tournament to show what these girls are capable of."
However, Mowat was pleased with the team's effort throughout the season.
"I believe the camaraderie is very strong among this group of girls and I am very optimistic about what we can accomplish as a team."
In terms of preparing for the spring, Mowat said consistency is the main thing the Cardinals need to focus on improving. Ball State opens the 2007 spring slate March 9-10 at the Rio Verde Intercollegiate in Arizona.
"Last year we had a very experienced team, and this year I was hoping they could just pick up where they left off," Mowat says. "I realized that we needed a little more time to adjust, especially having three underclassmen regularly compete."
The three underclassmen she is referring to are freshmen Kirsty O'Connor and Amy Roberts, along with sophomore Sarah Windlan.
"They all have very positive outlooks on their own potential and our potential as a team. The experience they gained in the fall was very important for them in understanding what is expected of them for the spring."
Mowat feels the technical aspect of things has been addressed thoroughly in practices, however, it is the mental game she is working to refine.
Having three underclassmen who rarely traveled last year move into a position where they will be traveling on a regular basis this spring means confidence and mental preparation will be key for the Cardinals.
The fall season was higlighted by senior Kallie Harrison, who fired a one-under par 71 in Denver to tie a school record for low single round. Her average score in nine rounds of golf was a 76.9.
"Kallie is a very steady competitor for us," Mowat adds. "She had a bit of a rough final round in this last tournament, but I am confident she will be geared up and ready to go for this spring. Her consistency is something we can always count on and I look to her as one of the leaders of this team."
Roberts is another player who impressed Mowat during the fall campaign.
"I do not think Amy has played her best golf yet, but she is so competitive that I know she will not settle for anything until she performs what she is capable of doing. I don't think I've seen what she is capable of yet, but I know she wants to be right up there with Kallie as one of our top players."
Mowat sees Roberts' and Harrison's potential in forming a dynamic partnership to play off each other and really push each other to improve their games. Roberts played ten rounds of golf this fall and had an 18-hole average of 78.9.
The Cardinals top finish in the fall was at the Tri-State University Fall Thunder Invitational. They finished second out of 13 teams and shot a collective 310 in the one day tournament. Roberts finished third individually, which was also the low finish on the season for the Cardinals.
